Because I was …
a poem by Shipra Jain, published in March-April 2018 Issue

Because I was welcomed with a smile not laugh,

As I was a wish not a reality

to which involved sacrifice, not satisfaction

and I was for happiness not affection

Because I was told not asked,

As I was shown not given

to which involved hopes, not an achievement

and I was for acceptance, not a rejection

Because I was intelligent not scholar,

As I was a scorer, not an achiever

to which involved nights, not days

and I was for questions, not suggestions

Because I was better, not best,

As I was beautiful, not gorgeous

to which involved Soul, not Body

and I was for doubts, not faith

Because I was.
