With her debut book, The Elephant Chaser’s Daughter, Shilpa Raj has marked her entrance in the galaxy of Indian authors. Being precise, she has annunciated a new path for millions like her by becoming the first untouchable woman in India to come up with a memoir! Shilpa Raj belongs to the family which is a part of the supposedly ‘lower class people’s’ society in Bangalore. And this is the story of India – we do have those among us which many of us, still in the age of digital India, consider as untouchables, Dalits and downtrodden. Author Shilpa Raj, challenging all the notions and set norms, has completed her higher education (an M.Sc. in Psychological Counselling) with the help Shanti Bhavan, the institution which provided her (and many others like her) education and opportunities to do something.

Shilpa Raj’s debut work has reached the online stores already and will be launched formally on 28 July 2017. Before being launched, the book has already received many positive reviews from the well-known book reviewers in India as well as abroad. The Kirkus Review has also praised the book as well as the author for coming with such a moving theme. Shilpa Raj is very enthusiastic about her debut work and she believes that her work will be the voice for millions of people living in India like outsiders! She has written about the problems of basic amenities among the lower section of society as well as the disparity that alienates the Untouchables from the mainstream of the society.
